The Backstory

Ibanez stirred up excitement in the collector community with the 2023 NAMM release of the PIA77 BON, a visually stunning limited edition model featuring the swirl artistry of Bonvillain Design Studio (BDS). Since then, BDS has continued to push the boundaries of custom guitar finishes, producing standout pieces for collectors and performers worldwide.

One standout project began as a personal refinish of an original 1991 JEM77 BFP (Blue Floral Print) for a collector friend. Inspired by the result, the BDS team sought out vintage BFPs in need of cosmetic restoration—carefully selecting only those that maintained structural integrity and originality. These guitars, refinished with reverence for Ibanez’s heritage, will remain exceptionally limited in number due to their rarity and the precision involved in their transformation.

JEM77 BFP – A Floral Icon

Originally released in 1991 as a signature model for Steve Vai, the JEM77 BFP became an instant classic in the Ibanez JEM lineup. Manufactured in Japan by FujiGen, this model stood out with its blue floral pattern finish and matching blue Tree of Life inlay. It featured a basswood body, maple neck, and a 24-fret maple fingerboard, loaded with two DiMarzio humbuckers and a single-coil for versatile tonal options. The Lo-Pro Edge tremolo bridge and Gotoh tuners added reliability and precision.

Unlike earlier models that used floral cloth, the BFP achieved its look through a floral paper print applied directly to the body and headstock, then sealed with clear coat—a method that gave the guitar a bold and distinctive aesthetic. Production ended in 1996, with the model briefly reimagined as the JEM77P in 2015.

Blue Multi Color (BMC) – A New Swirl Era

Among the most collectible JEM guitars are the legendary Multi Color models, particularly the Green (GMC) and Purple (PMC), with just 366 and 271 units produced, respectively. These guitars have become true grails for Steve Vai and Ibanez enthusiasts, discontinued in the early '90s due to high production costs.

With a nod to that iconic legacy, BDS created a new Blue Multi Color (BMC) swirl finish that perfectly complements the blue aesthetic of the JEM77 BFP. The result is a guitar that enhances the original's striking design with a fresh, fluorescent twist. Professionally set up with ultra-low action and paired with a new blue-lined Ibanez M100C hardshell case, these guitars are visually striking under blacklight and built to perform.

Each BMC BFP refinish is a rare, hand-crafted celebration of Ibanez history—reborn with a swirl of modern artistry.
