The Backstory
Ibanez turned heads at the 2023 NAMM Show with the debut of the PIA77 BON, a limited-edition model featuring the custom artistry of Bonvillain Design Studio (BDS). Since then, BDS has continued to evolve its signature swirl finishes and custom refinish work, creating one-of-a-kind instruments for collectors and performers around the globe.
One such project began with a refinish of an original 1991 JEM77 BFP (Blue Floral Print) for a collector friend of the studio. The BDS team was so inspired by the result that they began sourcing original JEM77 BFPs in need of finish restoration—focusing only on structurally sound guitars with significant cosmetic wear. These guitars are restored with full reverence for Ibanez’s history, making each build exceptionally rare and intentionally limited.
Blue Floral Print & JEM77 Heritage
Originally launched in 1991 as part of Steve Vai’s signature JEM series, the JEM77 BFP is an unmistakable instrument with deep collector appeal. Made in Japan by FujiGen, this model is renowned for its bold blue floral finish and blue-accented Tree of Life inlay. Built with a solid basswood body, maple neck, and DiMarzio HSH pickup configuration, it offers outstanding tonal flexibility. The Lo-Pro Edge tremolo and Gotoh tuners ensure rock-solid stability.
Unlike its floral predecessor, the JEM77 FP, the BFP’s finish was achieved using a printed floral paper adhered to the body and headstock before being sealed under a clear coat—a visually stunning and technically unique design. Production ended in 1996, and although the JEM77P revived a similar look in 2015, the original BFP remains a coveted piece of Ibanez history.
Blue Multi Color (BMC) – A New Classic
Steve Vai’s Multi Color JEMs, especially the ultra-rare Green (GMC) and Purple (PMC), are among the most collectible guitars in the Ibanez lineup. Discontinued in the early '90s due to high production costs, these swirl-finished models have gained mythical status.
Inspired by this legacy, BDS has created a new Blue Multi Color (BMC) finish that pays homage to Vai’s most sought-after instruments. This new colorway beautifully complements the BFP’s original blue pickups, Tree of Life inlays, and blue hardware. Professionally set up with ultra-low action and housed in a brand new blue-lined Ibanez M100C hardshell case, these refinished JEM77 BFPs are performance-ready and stage-worthy — especially under blacklight.
Due to the rarity of viable donor guitars and BDS’s commitment to quality and authenticity, these custom BMC BFPs will remain an extraordinarily limited offering.
