1934 Martin C-1 – Sunburst
The Altitude Summary
Here’s a true survivor: this 1934 Martin C-1 archtop in its original sunburst finish has lived a full musical life—and it shows. At over 90 years old, it’s officially a relic, with authentic wear, a replaced tailpiece, and four updated tuners sitting alongside two originals. The pickguard is missing, but this guitar more than makes up for it in tone and playability. Despite its age, it’s an absolute joy to play, with low action and a beautifully responsive feel that makes every note sing. In fair condition, with natural checking, finish wear, and plenty of character. And weighing in at just 4.5 lbs, this is one of the lightest archtops you'll ever come across. The guitar definitely has some cosmetic issues, some sort of chemical spill or candle wax drip has scarred the front. There is much evidence of its 90 years so please look over pictures carefully and drop us a line if you have any questions or concerns about condition.
Depression-Era Build Quality
Crafted during Martin’s bold 1930s expansion into archtop design, the C-1 features a carved spruce top with parallel bracing, mahogany back and sides, and a rosewood fingerboard. The f-holes and sunburst finish scream 1930s jazz club, while its featherweight build makes it unusually comfortable for long sessions or travel.
Warmth, Bark & Bloom
Even with a replaced tailpiece and mixed tuners, this Martin still projects like a champ. The tone is woody and warm, with a surprising midrange bloom and focused bark that punches through in ensemble settings. Whether you're comping chords or taking a melodic lead, it delivers a balanced, articulate sound unique to early American archtops.
Playability with Soul
This C-1 isn’t just a wall-hanger. Its low action and smooth neck make it incredibly playable for a vintage instrument. Despite its visual scars and replaced parts, the guitar retains a soulful feel—responsive and expressive in all the right ways.
