Overview
1965 Gibson SG Special – Cherry Red
The Altitude Summary
This 1965 Gibson SG Special captures the fiery spirit of mid-’60s rock—lightweight, resonant, and full of vintage charm. Its cherry red finish shows authentic checking and a few small areas of missing lacquer, adding character without detracting from its vibrant presence. The pickguard shows some warping, the tuners are Sperzel tuners and are not original to the guitar, and it has received a professional refret with only minor fret wear, based on some glue around the heel it is possible that the neck has been reset and the guitar plays wonderfully. The wiring harness is from 1962. Weighing in at just 6.7 lbs, it’s delightfully comfortable on the shoulder. Overall, this SG plays beautifully, sounds alive, and feels exactly like you want a vintage SG to feel
Mid-’60s Craftsmanship, Classic Style
Gibson’s mid-’60s SG Specials are known for their slim mahogany bodies, bevelled edges, and effortless upper-fret access. This example delivers that unmistakable combination of bite and warmth, wrapped in the deep cherry hue that has become an icon of the era.
Vibrola Expressiveness
Outfitted with Gibson’s short Maestro Vibrola tailpiece, this guitar offers smooth, subtle vibrato effects with a vintage touch. The system holds tuning well despite its age, letting players blend shimmering movement into chords or lead lines.
P-90 Power
Dual P-90 single-coil pickups deliver the sound that defined countless classic recordings—gritty, raw, and articulate. Roll back the volume for glassy cleans, or open it up for full-throated drive with singing sustain. The 1962 harness imparts a slightly darker edge that pairs beautifully with the mahogany body.
Ready for the Stage or Studio
The neck is straight, the frets are fresh, and setup feels lively and balanced. It’s a true player’s vintage SG—authentic yet gig-worthy. Includes a non-original hardshell case for secure transport.
